Cruises are a big industry. More than 10 million cruise passengers embarked on cruises from US ports in 2012, according to the Cruise Lines International Association. However, several high profile incidents and outbreaks of illness has resulted in Congress taking a closer look at the industry.
Congress has proposed several bills to address cruises, which we’re highlighting. Weigh in on these proposals and POPVOX will deliver your message to Congress, guaranteed.
Cruise Ship Legislation
- S 1359 Clean Cruise Ship Act: to amend the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to establish national standards for discharges from cruise vessels.
- HR 2800 Cruise Passenger Protection Act: To improve passenger vessel security and safety. (And S 1340 in the Senate.)
- S 1450 A bill “to close a tax loophole, currently exploited by the cruise industry, that has given cruise lines the ability to avoid paying U.S. income tax,” according to bill sponsor.
- S 1449 A bill that “requires cruise lines to pay a five percent excise tax on the income they generate from using U.S. ports to start and finish voyages,” according to bill sponsor.
Please keep in mind that highlighting a bill doesn’t imply a POPVOX endorsement in any way. Rather, we’re simply trying to offer one more way to stay informed of an overwhelmingly complex legislative system.
